Cold laser therapy uses low-intensity lasers to reach damaged tissue and help it heal. Painless, non-invasive and effective, cold laser therapy can be a great addition to standard chiropractic care. If you are suffering from an injury or pain, we encourage you to schedule an appointment to try out cold laser therapy.
Most people are familiar with hot lasers, which are used to cut materials, perform surgery and for other applications. But what is cold laser therapy?
Cold lasers, while still being composed of light, operate at different wavelengths from the lasers used to cut. They do not heat up the surface they are applied to. However, they do transfer energy, the energy that is absorbed by the cells in your muscles. Cold lasers pass through your skin and upper tissue to apply light energy to the cells at the site of your injury to reduce pain, reduce inflammation and encourage healing.
Cold lasers are used to treat a variety of conditions, particularly conditions that cause acute or chronic pain. Some of these conditions include:
Chiropractors like to use cold laser therapy for pain because it is non-invasive, gentle, has no side effects and has been shown to work. Cold lasers are still being studied to determine exactly why they are effective for pain relief, but it is theorized that the light energy in the cold laser helps restore normal cell function. It may increase the metabolism of the cells, which increases the rate of healing, fixes damage caused by the injury and reduces inflammation. Most people do not even feel the laser, although some people say they feel a slight tingling.
At Nystrom Chiropractic Group, we use what we consider one of the best cold lasers out there – the Erchnonia PL5. The PL5 allows us to program the treatment specifically for the patient, and to apply the laser exactly where it needs to go to produce the best results. The PL5 uses electric diodes, which are high-quality and perform consistently within exact parameters and penetrate to the level necessary to treat injuries.
