Your knees are two of the most important joints in the body – when they hurt, you have trouble standing, walking, running, climbing stairs – and the list goes on. At Nystrom Chiropractic in San Rafael, knee pain is one of the most common problems we treat. Here's some information about knee pain, from Dr. Sydne Pomin and Dr. Andrea Cavalla.
Unlike many other joints, the knee contains four bones – the femur (thigh bone), tibia (shin bone), patella (knee cap) and fibula (secondary bone in the leg). The bones are connected and supported by an array of muscles, ligaments and tendons, all of which must work together to flex or extend the knee. Injuries can result in pain, swelling, stiffness and inflammation, which mean the knee doesn't work as well. In addition, you may hear a popping sound in the joint or the knee may feel unstable with weight bearing.
Dislocated knee – if your knee is dislocated, it usually causes excruciating pain. This orthopedic emergency should be treated immediately to prevent severe swelling and possible long-term disability. However, a mild subluxation, which is a misalignment of the knee joint, can be treated easily by a chiropractor.
Knee bursae – bursitis occurs when the small, fluid-filled sacs surrounding the joint become swollen and inflamed. It is more likely to occur if the patella is out of alignment.
Sprains and strains – often the result of a sports injury, these may stand alone or accompany other knee injuries such as a dislocation or fracture. Conservative treatment with ice, heat and rest often solves the problem. However, these may also be accompanied by misalignment that a chiropractor can treat.
Tendinitis – overuse or repetitive motions injuries are common reasons for tendinitis to develop. This inflammatory condition can really limit your mobility. When you guard the joint, it increases the risk of secondary problems such as misalignments or back pain.
Frozen Knee – when you have knee pain, it's common to restrict your movement. Over time, the muscles, tendons and ligaments can shorten and literally freeze or lock the joint into place.
A chiropractor can often remedy your knee problems. Adjustments are typically quite successful in alleviating knee pain. They can also help with pain caused when you alter your gait because you hurt. Whether your knee pain is the result of a sports injury, overuse, poor body mechanics or a degenerative condition, our team in San Rafael can help.
